Today's post is simple: two beautifully decorated 15th-century Italian manuscripts, MS. Canonici Or. 62 and MS. Canonici Or. 79. MS. Canonici Or. 62 is a Pentateuch with Targum Onḳelos, Five Scrolls, Hafṭarot and commentaries, produced in 1472, while MS. Canonici Or. 79 is a copy of Jacob ben Asher's Arbaʾah Ṭurim (Even ha-ʾezer, Ḥoshen mishpaṭ), produced in 1438.
Both manuscripts feature stunning opening pages, decorated with gilding and miniatures, as well as colourful initial word panels or floral decoration at the beginning of sections within the text. We encourage you to browse the manuscripts for yourselves, but we've linked to some particularly beautiful pages below. Those who are particularly interested in decorated Italian manuscripts should also check out MS. Canonici Or. 73, a 14th-century Pisḳe Riaz which we covered in a previous blog post.
We're gathering information about what you'd like to find here.
Photographer John Barrett shares his experiences working on the project.
